Back in December 2007, now senior contributing fashion editor Katie Shillingford explored the archive of the cult fashion house CHANEL. It was an article in aid of the brand’s latest project, Mobile Art, which saw 20 artists showcase their work in a special space designed by architect Zaha Hadid. Lagerfeld donated a quilted CHANEL handbag to the cause, and each artist exhibited work inspired by the design. It was also to honour the release of Lagerfeld’s first film, Lagerfeld Confidential.

In the piece Shillingford noted that when Karl Lagerfeld took over in 1983 he “catapulted the already legendary brand to new heights, pushing the notion of branding into the outer reaches of another fashion galaxy.” She also provided a quote from Coco herself, a mantra which is still irrefutably upheld by her successor: ”I want to be what is to come”.
